José Schurmann’s Atelier, Antwerp, Belgium

Price: €120

Join me for a one-day workshop dedicated to the expressive and versatile medium of charcoal.

In this workshop, you will learn how to draw with charcoal and explore the many effects this beautiful material can offer. We will look at the impact of different papers, experiment with various types of charcoal, and discover how to create rich darks, soft transitions, highlights, textures, and expressive marks.

We will begin with quick sketches and playful exercises to get familiar with the materials. From there, we will move deeper into mark making, blending techniques, erasing methods, and ways to create light, shadow, and atmosphere. During the second part of the day, you will apply these techniques to a still life drawing and create a finished piece to take home.

The workshop is suitable for all levels. No previous experience is required. Whether you are completely new to charcoal or would like to deepen your understanding of the medium, you are very welcome. The only thing you need to bring is curiosity, enthusiasm, and a willingness to explore.

All materials will be provided. If you prefer to bring your own charcoal or drawing tools, you are welcome to do so.

The workshop will be taught in English and German. Translation support may be available if needed.

Tea and snacks will be provided. For lunch, please bring your own or visit the bakery next door.

The workshop will take place in the inspiring setting of José Schurmann’s Atelier in Antwerp. The exact address will be provided upon registration.

You will leave with a finished charcoal still life and a deeper understanding of how to use charcoal with confidence.
