Join me for a workshop dedicated to the beautiful, fluid, and versatile medium of watercolor.

In this workshop, you will learn a variety of watercolor techniques and explore the many effects this medium can offer. We will look at the impact of different papers, experiment with various painting tools, and discover how to create washes, texture, atmosphere, and semi-abstract effects.

We will begin with small exercises to get familiar with the materials and techniques. These playful studies will allow you to explore the behavior of watercolor, from soft transitions and transparent layers to more expressive marks and textured effects.

Workshop in Urban Sketching

Monday, October 26 | 10:00 – 16:00

José Schurmann’s Atelier, Kontich (close to Antwerp), Belgium

Price: €120

Join me for a workshop dedicated to the joy of urban sketching: a simple, lively, and expressive way to capture places, moments, and travel memories and atmosphere in your sketchbook or on piece of paper.

Urban sketching is a wonderful technique for holidays, vacations, city walks, and everyday observations. With only a few materials, such as pencil, ink, watercolor, and a sketchbook, you can quickly record a scene and preserve not only what you saw, but also how it felt, the mood and atmosphere of a place.

In this workshop, we will explore how to simplify a subject, choose an interesting composition, and build a sketch step by step. We will look at basic perspective, loose line work, light and shadow, and how to use watercolor to add atmosphere, mood, and a sense of place.

The focus will not be on perfect precision, but on observation, confidence, and creative freedom. You will learn how to work quickly, make decisions without overthinking, and capture the essence of a scene before the moment passes.

We will begin with small exercises to get familiar with the materials and the urban sketching process. From there, we will create several quick studies before developing one more finished sketch. A selection of source images will be provided, and weather permitting, we may also sketch from the surroundings.

This workshop is suitable for all levels. No previous experience is required. Whether you are completely new to sketching or would like to bring more life and atmosphere into your travel sketchbook, you are very welcome. Everyone will be supported at their own level, with individual guidance throughout the workshop.

All materials will be provided. If you already have your own sketchbook, watercolor set, brushes, pens, or favorite travel materials, you are welcome to bring them.

The workshop will be taught in English and German. Translation support may be available if needed.

Tea and snacks will be provided. For lunch, please bring your own.

The workshop will take place in the inspiring setting of José Schurmann’s Atelier in Kontich, Belgium. The exact address will be provided upon registration.

You will leave with several urban sketching studies, one more developed sketch, and a better understanding of how to capture travel moments with ease, atmosphere, and joy.

Limited to 5 participants to allow for individual guidance.

Join me for a one-day workshop dedicated to the expressive and versatile medium of charcoal.

This workshop is designed for both new and returning participants. If you are joining for the first time, you will be guided step by step through the materials, techniques, and creative process. If you have taken part before, this is a chance to deepen what you learned, gain more confidence, and apply the techniques to new exercises and a fresh subject.

Throughout the day, we will explore the many effects charcoal can offer. We will look at the impact of different papers, experiment with various types of charcoal, and discover how to create rich darks, soft transitions, highlights, textures, and expressive marks.

In the second part of the day, you will apply these techniques to a drawing of your choice. A selection of source images will be provided, allowing you to choose a subject that inspires you and suits your level. You will create a finished piece to take home.
